Harikamboji

The 28th melkarta, a raga that was used most prominently in ancient Tamil music.

Harikamboji is the 28th melakarta raga. This raga might often seem to contain hues of ragas such as Khamas, Sahana, Kegaragaula and Natakurinji which are among the many popular ragas that are derived from it. Harikamboji was the fundamental scale in the panns of ancient Tamil music (the equivalent of the raga system) where it was called Sempaalai. Harikamboji's prominence today can however be credited to composer Tyagaraja, whose numerous gems in the raga are among the best known compositions in it. This programme includes a few of the lesser known ones and many composed by post-Trinity composers.
