Ramnad C S Murugabhoopathy

A tribute to the mridangam maestro in connection with his birth anniversary on February 15.

Ramanathapuram C S Murugabhoopathy, popularly referred to as CSM, was one of the most distinguished mridangam maestros of the 20th century. He was a contemporary of Palghat Mani Iyer and Palani Subramania Pillai, and, together with them, was considered one of the Mridangam Trinity. The three of them influenced and drew inspiration from one another. It is said that Palani Subramania Pillai, who was also adept at playing the kanjira, played it at concerts only in the company of Palghat Mani Iyer or C S Murugabhoopathy. At his peak, Murugabhoopathy was a respected mridangist and one of the favoured accompanists of the leading musicians of the time. He groomed a large number of percussionists who went on to make a name for themselves, with the best known among them being kanjira wizard G Harishankar. Ramanathapuram C S Murugabhoopathy's musical career spanned almost over six decades.
