S Ramanathan

A tribute to Dr S Ramanathan - musician, musicologist, teacher and composer.

S Ramanathan was born on 8 April 1917. Over nearly five decades of music, he dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge, and his legacy remains in the form of his performances, research, students and compositions. After a course in music at the Annamalai University, known for the quality of its music department, Ramanathan embarked on a musical journey that took him far and wide. Ramanathan was at heart a student and researcher, and ended up teaching at many universities and colleges in India and in the United States of America. He was awarded a PhD in Ethnomusicology by the Wesleyan University for his research on the musical aspects in the Tamil classic, Silappathikaaram. Ramanathan's research extended from pre-Trinity composers to folk music. Along with being a student, he was also a generous teacher, and shared his knowledge and insights not just with his student but with everyone interested in music. His lecture-demonstrations on the 22 srutis and the one on Tyagaraja, titled, A Day with Tyagaraja, among many others, show the range of subjects and also the manner in which he could convey his ideas and tell stories. Dr Ramanathan passed away on 19 March 1988. This is a tribute to Dr S Ramanathan, a soul steeped in music.
